Development of Universal Design for the Toyota Raum

The compact passenger car Raum released in May, 2003 was developed under the theme of universal design in a vehicle. The department in charge of ergonomics established two unique evaluation indices, ergo-index and situational suitability. The vehicle design was developed using the indices and through repeated discussion with users. This paper explains the development process for the following features, (1) use of a large open panorama door and a tumble front-passenger seat to achieve superb ease of ingress and egress as well as expanded interior space, (2) attachment of assist grips at several places inside the cabin, (3) functional components designed based on discussion with users, and (4) a seat surface treated with the Fraichir process, which does not irritate the skin.
