摘要

Garden cities and the garden city movement, initiated by Sir Ebenezer Howard, author of To-morrow: A Peaceful Path to Real Reform (1898) and Garden Cities of To-morrow (1902), have been extensively discussed in the literature. A recent addition is The Peaceful Path: Building Garden Cities and New Towns, authored by Stephen V Ward. This book has eight chapters, six about the United Kingdom, one primarily about Europe and the United States, and one about the future of these communities. The title of the book is partially based on Howard's first book, in which Howard wanted to improve people's lives without negatively influencing their status quo. Howard envisioned free-standing garden cities for about 30,000 people, as well as clustered garden cities connected through a transport network. Garden cities would provide opportunities to live, work and play in well-planned, spacious and verdant environments.
