Planning after Macpherson

When the Macpherson Report into the Metropolitan Police inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence1 was published in 1999 it was front-page news, but even then one of the big questions was how long would it remain at the forefront of the minds of politicians and policymakers. Those not deeply involved with the politics of race equality (which includes most planners) might have been forgiven for thinking that Macpherson would be something of a flash in the pan. They would have been wrong: 20 years of local, national, and international campaigning has changed political sensitivities, and the Government acknowledges the existence of widespread racism in Britain and accepts the need to do more about countering it than has been done in the past.
