I welcome Diane Warburton's contribution to the debate on planning participation (Who are the NIMBYs?', Town & Country Planning, May 2005). There is, of course, a vast spectrum of types of development that trigger the NIMBY reaction referred to in her article. It can be argued that the type concentrated on in the article represents one end of this spectrum. The article rightly points out that in many instances people are able to accept the need for housing development, but would like to influence matters to ensure higher design standards. Arguably this is the role of the local planning authority; there is certainly a sufficient weight of support for higher design standards for them to be tough on this issue.
