OEBB receives first Vectron

Siemens handed over the first of 30 Vectron MS electric locos to Austrian Railways (OBB) on 5 March. Known as Class 1293, they can work off 15 kV and 25 kV AC plus 1500 V and 3000 V DC and will be approved to work in Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovenia and Croatia and have the following ATP systems: ETCS, PZB, LZB, SCMT, SHP and Mirel. They carry four pantographs, two for AC (1950 and 1600 mm wide) and two for DC (1950 and 1450 mm). Maximum speed is 160 km/h - the bogies have additional active dampers for smoother running. OBB expects the locos to be classified as having a neutral effect on track, to avoid extra infrastructure charges. OBB has signed a framework contract for up to 200 Vectrons with Siemens. A second order for 17 more Class 1293, to be delivered in 2019, was signed in March.
