'Rolling rail strikes' in France for three months

Following a strike on 22 March which crippled train services for 24 hours, the French rail unions announced a series of "rolling strikes" from 3 April to 28 June with the aim of forcing the government to withdraw plans to reform the railways (see two page article in TR EU 268). The unions have published all the dates which consist of two days of strikes followed by three days of work, although there have been dark warnings of "events" even on days of normal services which some commentators have taken as meaning wildcat acts of sabotage. The most radical union, Sud-Rail, said its strike would be renewable each day. The French government has shown no signs of changing its course, saying that the reforms are essential and inevitable.
