Since November 2017 Vlaanderen public transport operator De Lijn has been testing a very long tram, by Belgian standards, on the Antwerpen network. Two existing Hermelijn (ermine) trams were coupled to make a 60-metre long vehicle able to transport 350 passengers - 100 more than the new long Albatros trams. Gathering experience with such a long vehicle is the reason for the tests, although in principle two Hermelijns in multiple should be no different to a single tram concerning curve radius and braking distance. As other traffic is not familiar with such long trams, both Hermelijns have received striking yellow vinyls and the digital indicators change every few seconds from the destination to the text "60 metres long". For safety reasons the second Hermelijn has a De Lijn employee on board. The test rake can be seen three times each weekday, during peaks, on Line 3 between P+R Melsele and P+R Merksem - platforms on other lines are too short. Even on Line 3 the platform at Vredespark in Zwijndrecht has had to be lengthened temporarily.
