As we went to press with this issue, the rail strikes in France - two days on strike followed by recovery and three days of "normal services" - were continuing. It is difficult to see a way out of the strikes because there is little compromise possible - the unions want absolutely nothing of the reorganisations which have now been voted through parliament and the government is determined to push them through.They know they are absolutely necessary and for the last umpteen years successive governments have fudged the issue. We agree in general with what is being done and this is why.
