On 26 April the first direct freight train from China to Antwerpen started its journey in the Chinese seaport of Tangshan, arriving in the Belgian port on 12 May carrying 34 containers loaded with industrial minerals for the production of paper, ceramics, toothpaste and cosmetics. On the return journey containerised Volvo cars were loaded in Gent for Xiang in China. The train, projected to operate initially twice a month, is part of the "Belt and Road Initiative", the Chinese project to restore the former "Silk Road". The new link is an initiative by Tangshan's city and port in co-operation with COSCO Shipping Lines and CRC, respectively the Chinese national shipping and railway companies.
