It was late 2004 when Joyce Gant first started to feel severe back pain. As a five-year breast cancer survivor, she always had the fear that the cancer had migrated to a different part of her body. So, to be safe, Gant made an appointment with her oncologist. He ordered a scan of her spine and a series of blood tests that showed the pain was coming from a crushed disk in her spine. But there was something else, he told Gant. The blood tests showed the cancer had returned and there were two tumors on her spine. "Without the crushed disk I might not have found out about the cancer until much later," says Gant, an event planner who lives in a suburb of Detroit, Mich.
