The development of the Schema World Action Research Method (SWARM) for the elicitation of perceptual cycle data

The Perceptual Cycle Model (PCM) has been widely applied tornunderstanding processes such as decision-making and situationrnawareness as it provides a distributed approach, acknowledging thernrole of both internally held mental schemata and externalrnenvironmental information in shaping these processes. There are,rnhowever, no associated methods with this model and thereforernresearchers have had to be creative with other methods in order torninfer perceptual cycle processing. This paper presents the Schema-rnWorld-Action Research Method (SWARM) in which cognitivernprompts for eliciting perceptual cycle information have beenrndeveloped, initially for the aviation domain. Application of thernmethod is exemplified through a case study of an aviation criticalrnincident. The results demonstrate high theoretical validity with thernPCM and a testu0001retest reliability assessment demonstrated highrnreliability when the method was applied on two separate occasions.rnFuture research endeavours are acknowledged in which thernmethod is expanded across domains.
