The Marangoni convective instability during the absorption of component A from the gas phase by a liquid layer containing chemically reactive component B is studied. The absorption of component A is accompanied by a bulk chemical reaction. It is shown that, at negative values of the derivative of the surface tension with respect to the concentration of component B, the chemisorption is convectively unstable; at moderately positive values of this derivative, the absorption process is stable; and at large positive values of the derivative, highly oscillatory instability arises. The solution of the spectral problem for small perturbations in carbon dioxide absorption by aqueous monoethanolamine demonstrates that perturbations in a falling film increase much faster than in a stagnant liquid layer.
