On 15 December 2015, AMI received information that the Italian Navy (IN) has begun working to secure funding for the procurement of the third pair of Type 212A (Todaro) class diesel electric submarines (SSK). Italy ordered its first two Type 212A submarines from Fin-cantieri in August 1997, and the two submarines were built at Fincantieri's yard in Muggiano, Italy. The first steel was cut for the lead unit on 19 July 1999, and for the second in July 2000. The first unit of the class, SALVATORE TODARO, was commissioned in 2005, and was followed by the SCIRE in February 2008. In August 2008, the IN awarded Fincantieri the construction contract for two additional units of the Todaro class (PIETRO VENUTI and ROMEO ROMEI). The Italian U-212A Program also covers an Integrated Logistic Support (ILS) package and a new Type 212A training center at Taranto Arsenal.
