Drawing on experience to make things work

The topic of sketching (March and July 2015) returns, with Ed Saul wistfully recalling his earlier life: Leonardo and Wren used the facilities available at the time, and even today the sketch has its place. I can't talk engineering solutions without a pencil and a piece of paper to hand. My sketches are not masterpieces but more doodles. What would the great masters have made of modern aids, I wonder? Wren and Pugin had catalogues of standard details and used these to great advantage. It is clear that the same details were repeated extensively and developed in their later projects.
