Since 2007, the African Union's Mission to Somalia (AMISOM) has epitomised the tactical highs and strategic lows of modern peacekeeping. Indeed, by mid-2017, AMISOM had become the largest deployment of uniformed peacekeepers anywhere in the world, but seemingly had little to show for it. Paul D Williams's latest book, Fighting for Peace in Somalia: A History and Analysis of the African Union Mission (AMISOM), 2007-2017, is an ambitious exploration of arguably the world's most complex - and most deadly - peace operation to date.
