It was a very narrow corridor of roads, lanes and tracks, some good, others pot-marked and peeling, that would carry the armoured spearhead of the massed tank columns of the British Second Army committed to Operation Market Garden, Montgomery's smash-and-grab raid through Holland to the Ruhr in 1944.
