A hundred years ago, in the space of thirty-seven days, Europe drifted into a senseless, entirely avoidable and devastating armed conflict. A mere thirty years later, a madman was allowed to drag Europe into another disastrous war, involving the perpetration of almost unimaginable mass atrocities. After the carnage of these two world wars, much of the history of the last seventy years has been about finding better ways to preserve international peace and security. Yet, as the title of this book suggests, peace-making is neither a simple nor a straightforward business.
