Out of the Mountains: The Coming Age of the Urban Guerrilla

David Kilcullen has a knack for keeping ahead of the pack when it comes to identifying tough issues that need careful thought and bold responses. His two papers 'Countering Global Insurgency' (2005) and 'Counterinsurgency Redux' (2006) caught the mood of the moment and helped to reinforce his position as a leading emerging thinker in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency (COIN). In 2007, Kilcullen was appointed General David Petraeus's senior COIN adviser in Baghdad and was part of the core team that redefined the US-led campaign plan and reshaped the US military's approach to COIN. In 2009, as the ISAF campaign in Afghanistan started to falter, he published The Accidental Guerrilla, which drew on his experience in Iraq and Afghanistan and his strong academic background. It was such a readable, contemporary insight into classic COIN that the British Army made it a must-read for British troops getting ready for Afghanistan.
