Philosophy Theology and Politics: A Reading of Benedict Spinoza's Tractatus Theologico-Politicus

With the reemergence of new fundamentalist religious movements in the world and the divisions they have created within modem liberal democracy, some recent theorists have returned to Spinoza's political-theological writing in order to understand how one of the founding liberal thinkers attempted to tame extreme religious passions and channel them toward democratic purposes. [...] they point to an abundance of Hebrew quotations in its earlier chapters and the absence of these in its later chapters.
