The first introduction, "Context," discusses (1) the place of the Symposium in the Platonic corpus, (2) the Greek drinking party which provides the dialogue's setting, (3) various Greek words translated "love" (especially philia and eros), and (4) homo-eroticism in late fifth century B.C. Athens.
