Having previously covered France, Belgium, Denmark and Austria in this occasional series, PAUL SHANNON introduces us to Europe's largest railway nation. German railway history dawned on December 7, 1835, when a British-built steam locomotive, Adler, hauled a train between Nuremburg and Fuerth. From the 1850s onwards, the various autonomous states which at that time made up the 'nation' of Germany developed their own networks. Two years after the end of World War One, those networks were combined and nationalised as the Deutsche Reichsbahn.
