Some ten minutes (literally) after sending the September issue to press, a thought suddenly entered my head. It was a thought so blindingly obvious that I couldn't believe it hadn't occurred to me earlier and, at first, I was annoyed with myself for not having incorporated it into the article. But it then began to dawn on me that in 100 years of analysis, no-one else appears to have thought of it either; Not the inquiry inspector. Not the coroner. Not the newspapers of the day. Not the specialist railway press. Not any number of eminent railway historians, including Cecil J. Allen, O.S. Nock and L.T.C. Rolt.
