AC electric loco No. 87002 made its debut at the Long Marston open weekend on June 7/8 following overhaul. Its acquisition by the AC Locomotive Group was a pleasant surprise (RM Jun p10) as it had been expected that all available 87s were destined for export, but thanks to the Bulgarian Railroad Co, Porterbrook and Romic Ace, it has been possible for the group to complete a full set of AC electrics from Classes 81 to 89. The Porterbrook purple-liveried locomotive No. 87002 had previously been named The AC Locomotive Group, from April 27, 2005 to February 2008, after which the plates were removed at Long Marston in preparation for export. It has now been restored to its 1970s/early-1980s appearance in British Rail corporate blue livery with 36-way jumper cables and given its former name Royal Sovereign.
