Network Rail has agreed to provide portable ERTMS signalling kits for use on steam locomotives.rnThe breakthrough came at a meeting on July 3 and although it will initially apply only to the ERTMS early deploymentrnscheme on the Cambrian routes west of Shrewsbury, it is great news for the future of steam on the main line. It could presumably be adapted to work on classic diesels as well.rnWithout the agreement, steam and private dieselrnoperators would have seen their available routes shrink year by year as ERTMS (European Railway Traffic Management System) or its derivatives are deployed across the network.
