Cross Country Completes Class 170 Internal Refurb

Cross Country has completed the internal refurbishment of its Class 170 fleet just 60 weeks after taking over the franchise. Inheriting a mix of two- and three-car DMUs from two operators - Central and Midland Mainline-with a variety of internal configurations, Cross Country worked with consultant Ray Kramer and Porterbrook Leasing on a complete re-work of the passenger saloons. In all, 74 vehicles have been altered. The design brief was "to provide a new corporate look with a common style and increased passenger capacity". The winner of the tender for the work was Transys Projects, which is based in the former EMU depot at Clacton, Essex, and which also re-worked the former South West Trains' Class 170s before their transfer to TransPennine Express. Internally, the units have been stripped of seats, tables and carpets to allow new carpets, tables and a revised seating formation to be installed.
