Although mass production of steam locomotives ended in most countries four or five decades ago, the technology continued to advance through the efforts of a few dedicated engineers, including Andre Chapelon, Adolph Giesl (see previous article), Livio Dante Porta and others. Indeed, Porta was working on new developments right up until his death in 2003.rnAs a result, it is now possible to develop what Porta defined as SGS (Second Generation Steam) locomotives. Such machines would be capable of achieving up to an 80 per cent increase in maximum thermal efficiency compared with 1950s designs and would benefit from significantly-reduced operating and maintenance costs, emissions and servicing downtime.
