News that electrification of the Liverpool-Manchester line has been given the go-ahead has been greeted with a round of applause. Anyone who cares about our rail network is sure to be in favour.rnHowever, there is a downside to this particular scheme, in that it concerns the single most important line in railway history, on which the Stephensons first demonstrated the railway's potential to convey passengers and goods at speed.
