Electric'Voyager'plan - but will it save Derby?

The conversion of Class 220/221 'Voyagers' into electrics by means of an additional carriage fitted with a pantograph is being considered by the Department for Transport, but there is no certainty that Bombardier's Derby Works could benefit from the proposal. The DfT has started to seriously look at the additional vehicle proposal, which would not only increase capacity on CrossCountry's crowded trains but eliminate operation of diesel passenger trains for long distances on electrified lines, such as between Birmingham and Glasgow.
