Silver-liveried electric locomotive No. 91107 is standing at the head of a Mark IV rake of coaches at King's Cross station, allocated to work the 10.00 departure to Edinburgh - 'The Flying Scotsman'. This most famous of named trains first left King's Cross for Edinburgh in 1862 and, despite at least three revolutionary changes in railway ownership, still does so today. Some might say that the status of this emblematic service has been reduced in the modern age, as it now has four intermediate stops, but the Flying Scotsman still averages 89mph to Edinburgh, including all stops, and an excellent 100.5mph for 188(1/2)miles to York, despite the Peterborough call.
