If you ever wonder what heaven might be like, John Austin is the man to tell you. He found it on a bitterly cold February night in 1987 after taking the immensely courageous decision, at the age of 37, to put the life he'd known to that point behind him and follow his dream to become a full-time railway artist. That night, after moving his few possessions into the 1741-built town house that remains his Bridgnorth 'den', he wandered across to the Severn Valley Railway in a heavy snowfall, with the River Severn frozen over, to celebrate his new-found freedom at the Railwayman's Arms.
