GWS launches appeal as new lease secures Didcot

The Great Western Society's lease on Didcot Railway Centre expires in 2019, but the GWS has a secure future following Network Rail's offer of a new 50-year lease on the centre. The GWS has to raise ￡ 125,000 plus expenses to take up the offer (50 per cent payable on completion and 50 per cent a year later) with an annual rent of ￡1,000, reduced from the present ￡13,800. On expiry of the new lease in 2061, NR (or its successors) will have to offer the GWS a further lease - a deal as close as it is possible to get to a freehold on active railway land.
