Nework Rail gets cold shoulder as Transport Scotland branches out

Transport Scotland's Bill Reeve described to the All Party Parliamentary Rail Group how a new 35-mile railway was to be built without the involvement of Network Rail, apart from a connection agreement at one end. Transport Scotland has reopened a number of lines, including Airdrie-Bathgate and Stirling-Alloa, but this is the first time it is doing so on its own. The new line runs between Newcraighall, near Edinburgh, and Tweedbank, in the Scottish Borders, and has more than 100 structures. It is to be built largely on an existing double track formation, although this time it will be a mixture of single and double track with dynamic loops to enable a half-hourly passenger service.
