An unexpected victim of the big freeze was Scottish Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson, who resigned on December 11 after criticism that his country was insufficiently prepared to cope with the first heavy snowfalls. He had been due to officially open the new Airdrie-Bathgate line on December 10 (see last month's RM), but although the line opened, the ceremony had become one of the victims of the weather chaos. He was replaced by Keith Brown, who visited Eastfield depot to review new measures but was equally powerless to prevent weather disruption.
