Rail freight grants, available under the modal shift category, have escaped largely unscathed during the Government's spending review. Last year, £20million was allocated and the recommendation is that f 19m is made available annually for 2011-13 -a cut of just £1m. Chris MacRae, the Freight Transport Association's rail freight policy manager, said: "Clearly, even in these tough trading conditions, the Government recognises the environmental benefits that modal shift can bring. "The grant will support the market in its consideration of environmentally-friendly and cost-effective alternatives to our congested roads and, in turn, generate greater use of railways and waterways."
