'Patriot'tender rebuild starts at Barry

Concurrent with the LMS-Patriot Project announcing that L&NWR Heritage Ltd, Crewe, is the'preferred builder'of the boiler for its 'Patriot' No. 45551 The Unknown Warrior (RM Jan), dismantling of a Fowler tender, intended for use with the loco, began at Barry. It is thought to have originally entered Barry scrapyard behind LMS'Crab'No. 42765). Initial work, by Cambrian Transport Ltd, involves removal of the badly-corroded tank. A Patriot Project member has pledged a'significant' sum towards the cost of manufacturing a new tank. The condition of the tender frames will then be assessed. New axlebox castings will be produced using a pattern already held at the Avon Valley Railway. Other progress towards construction of the loco includes fabrication of smoke deflectors, while the bogie bolster casting arrived at Llangollen in November for fitting to the loco frames.
