MTU power units chosen for new Intercity expresses

Hitachi Rail Europe, which has won the multi-billion contract to design and build trains for the new Intercity Express programme (IEP) has selected German engine builder MTU as preferred supplier of power packs for the new trains. The announcement, made at the Innotrans exhibition in Berlin, is for the supply of 250 Type 1600 R80L engines of 700kW (940hp) together with a servicing contract for 2716 years. Hitachi says the contact is worth more than €200m (£160m). The Japanese company is building 596 carriages that will be formed into 92 trains. With the fleet for the East Coast and Great Western Main Lines being a mix of electric and bi-mode trains, all are to be fitted with at least one MTU underfloor power pack (also known as an Auxiliary Generator Unit).
