Network Rail is to rip up the remaining rails and sleepers from the mothballed Leamside line, betweenTursdale Junction, Co Durham, and Pelaw Junction, Tyne & Wear. The decision has been taken partly because the abandoned 21 -mile route has been a target for metal thieves in recent years and partly because NR accepts the track that has been disused since 1991 would have to be completely replaced before any possible reopening of the line.
