The numberplate of world steam speed record holder No. 60022 Mallard was sold at Great Central Railwayana auction on July 14 for £20,200 - thought to be a record price for a smokebox plate. A group of railfans in America is trying to raise f 3m to steal Mallard's speed record by converting 1937-built Baldwin 4-6-4 No. 3463 into a biofuel-powered loco capable of 130mph.
