British Rail ran its last train - a Dollands Moor-Wembley freight - at a minute to midnight on November 21, 1997, but unknown to many members of the public, the British Railways Board lived on. The board's staff, under the leadership of chairman John Welsby, had spent the previous five years tactfully managing the monumental process of selling off the assets during the process of privatisation.
