Class 97 driver-shortage leads to cancellation and a £40,000 bill

The travails of charter operations west of Shrewsbury on the Cambrian Lines continue as the sold-out Statesman Rail'Welsh Mountain Statesman'on July 6 was cancelled the day before the operation. The tour had been due to leave from Sheffield and call at stations via the Midland Main Line to the West Midlands and on to Aberystwyth. The yellow-liveried ERTMS-fitted Class 97s, owned by Network Rail, were provided as part of the legal process required in introducing a new signalling system. They are fitted with the required in-cab equipment and only DB Schenker (DBS) drivers are 'passed'for this operation.
