Diesel prototype Lion certainly turned heads with its startling all-white livery when it first appeared in April 1962 - and those fortunate enough to have seen it in action during its short life have never forgotten the experience. The Type 4 locomotive, the last to emerge from the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Company Works (BRCW) at Smethwick, was heralded at its press launch as the "most powerful single engine locomotive ever to run on British tracks".
