A steel stockade surrounds the entrance to Dollands Moor Yard. At this freight gateway to the Channel Tunnel, security is the watchword, but the fencing has served the purpose of keeping people in just as much as preventing unauthorised entry. At the height of the illegal immigration crisis, the future existence of freight through the Channel Tunnel was in serious doubt. From the accounts of staff on the ground, the problem was even more dramatic than reported in the media. It was not unknown for scores of people to disembark from a northbound freight and, even if the authorities rounded up a handful, dozens escaped.
