Major railway projects have survived national austerity measures introduced by Chancellor George Osborne. At a time when the Government is imposing budget cutbacks on numerous aspects of society, infrastructure upgrades -which include railways - are to be invested in heavily. In a spending review announced on June 26, the chancellor said that out of £100billion earmarked for public spending from 2015, almost a third -£30bn - will be spent on rail projects.
