The tram system in the Algerian city of Oran, which is operated by Paris Metro operator RATP in a joint venture with Algerian public transport organisations, was officially inaugurated on May 1. Public services began the next day on the 18.7km-long route, which has 32 stops serving the most densely populated parts of the city. The trams were built in Alstom's Barcelona factory, which supplied 30 five-section 'Citadis'units in a contract worth €148million. The system in Oran has 650 employees, who have been trained by RATP experts seconded to the Setram joint venture.
