The East Coast Main Line was disrupted on December 17 and 18 when the overhead lines were damaged between Letchworth and Hitchin. Emt HST power car No. 43089 was hired to East Coast from December 28-31, being reported on a number of services. On january 5, the 06.55 Skipton-King's Cross service was headed by Class 91 No. 91102 instead of the usual HST-departure from Leeds for its next stop at Doncaster saw it travel south towards Wakefield Westgate instead of north for Hambleton Junction.
