NAMES OF THE TBMs

Tunnellng tradition says that work cannot start until a tunnel boring machine has been named to give good luck to the project. Eight TBMs will be used on Crossrail and, following a public competition, names have so far been allocated to six of them. As they will operate in pairs, the chosen names are also in pairs: Ada and Phyllis: Ada Lovelace was an early computer scientist who worked with Charles Babbage on his'analytical engine'. Phyllis Pearsall was a painter who created the first London A-Z map in 1936.
