The idea behind Crossrail is not new as the running of main line trains under central London dates back to at least the 1940s, while a precursor of the current scheme has been on the table since 1989. A1948 report proposed various possible tunnel routes, one of which eventually became London Underground's Victoria Line, while another followed roughly that now used by Thameslink. A third line connecting Lewisham to Kilburn via Trafalgar Square was rated as lower priority.
