Suburban N2 tank No. 1744 will make an in-steam return to Peterborough for the first time since it was withdrawn from New England shed in September 1962. The Nene Valley Railway has arranged to bring the unique survivor to its metals for a locally themed steam gala on February 21 -22, marking 50 years since the closure of the major ex-Great Northern steam shed. It will be the first time that the NVR has received a former Peterborough-allocated engine, although the loco (numbered 69523 in BR days) was shedded at 34E for only five months. Wansford Locomotive Supt Paul Roe is appealing to former drivers, firemen and fitters who once worked at New England to attend a planned reunion at the gala. The much-travelled Gresley Society Trust-owned N2 will again hit the road on March 26 when it travels to the Lincolnshire Wolds Railway for a month's running spell on 'home' GNR turf.
