Readers will probably be aware that most speed restrictions are due to 'Condition of Track'(COT). This subject was debated at the Mainline Steam Locomotive Owners' Association AGM (see last month's column), with Richard Corser, of Locomotive Services Ltd, saying that the winter Whitehall tunnel engineering works blockade had allowed track under a nearby flat-arched bridge to be re-tamped back to its original level, thus removing a gauging restriction after ballast levels had been increased in recent years.
