'Luddite' response from unions over night-time operations and new trains

Rail strikes always cause a chord of irritation with the travelling public. The reasons are debated and contested endlessly, but both Transport for London and First Great Western seem to be having more than the usual amount of disruption. With London having had 24-hour buses for many years, it seems quite reasonable for TfL to extend the system to its trains. Commercial logistics companies and freight operators regularly work through the night, but one does not often hear of them having major industrial relations issues because of it.
